Cameryn | Massachusetts

Meet Cameryn and his courageous family. The truth is, this isn’t the first time we’ve had the honor of meeting them. Cameryn’s big sister, Lexi, is a Tiny Sparrow alumna from two years ago.

Their story goes something like this: Lexi has spent her entire 14 years struggling with Mitrochondrial Disease, a life threatening illness. Mitochondrial Disease results from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. It is often misdiagnosed for years depending on which cells are affected. Lexi defied medical odds, endured debilitating seizures, has collectively spent more time in the hospital than at home, and today lives with a central line and G-tube. Her little brother, Cameryn, watched her persevere all those years.

When Cameryn’s mother was pregnant with his little brother Ethan, 6 years ago, she found out she has the disease and so did her third child in the womb. The former neonatal intensive care nurse hasn’t been able to work since then. If that wasn’t enough?

Cameryn was diagnosed with the disease 2 ½ years ago. Needless to say, the news was scary considering what he experienced with Big Sis.

Today at 12-years-old, instead of playing with friends and competing in sports (his #1 favorite thing to do in the whole wide world), he also battles Gastroparesis, which means his stomach doesn’t empty properly. He’s said, “I just want to be a regular kid.”

When this young man grows up, he wants to be a professional athlete AND a Monk Seal researcher. Although he comes across as quiet and shy, once you get to know him, he’s bubbly and outgoing. We hope Cameryn will have the chance to pursue his dreams, and until then, never ever stop dreaming.

Thank you to Megan Belanger of http://www.meganbelangerphoto.com/ for her donating her time, talent and beautiful images of Cameryn’s family.
