Nolan | Anaplastic Medulloblastoma | Georgia

My name is Nolan and I am everything eight years old.  I love tennis, my buddies, making card castles and most important NASCAR and I am fighting Anaplastic Medulloblastoma with everything I have.

NOLAN: The Warrior

Most 5 year olds spend their summer before starting Kindergarten thinking “Who will sit next to me on the bus, will my backpack be bigger than me, will I like my teacher, and do they have yummy snacks at break?”  In the summer of 2009 when Nolan should have been experiencing a rite of passage that most children do, his summer started with vomiting.  What started with once a day, turned into vomiting all day everyday.  Then, headaches. His summer was spent, sick. As summer transitioned into fall , when Nolan should have been enjoying those first magical weeks in Kindergarten, he along with his family were experiencing CT results that revealed a golf ball size tumor in the 4th ventricle of the brain, two in his spine and a spread of leptomeningeal disease within his head and spine.  Five days later and after a 7 hour surgery, his neurosurgeon was able to remove most the main tumor.

Thirty (30) radiation treatments later, endless rounds of chemo over a 12 month period and his first treatment plan, Nolan relapsed only three months after with one lesion in his brain and one in his spine.  The next treatment plan consisted of bi-weekly infusions and chemo five days every month.  This second treatment plan successfully shrunk the tumors.  While this was wonderful news, it came at a great price for this warrior who battled vomiting, brain bleeds, shunt revisions, IV nutrition, need for hearing aids and seizures.  But he faced and battled it with courage and vengence along each and every step of the way.

Throughout all of this Nolan has defined the true meaning of strength with his positive attitude, visiting with other children fighting the fight in hospital, playing with the therapy dogs, watching his favorite NASCAR driver as a virtual pit crew captain and most important with his beautiful smile and most tender heart.

My name is Nolan and this is my journey.

Hi, my nephew Toby was diagnosed with anaplastic medulloblastoma November 7th, 2011. He also had the same symptoms as Nolan. He did get to start kindergarten but only got to go steady for about a month before his symptoms started getting in the way of life. He is a fighter and he gives me hope. I am not quite sure how I got around to your page, but I am so glad that I seen this. God bless Nolan and his family. Beautiful photos.
